Memories of Miss Memory

BBC NEWS | England | London | ‘Artwork’ sparks major bomb alert

April 27th, 2006

A sign of the times.
bomb alert over artwork
This story reminded me of when I was doing my first “whispers of the city” project as part of Cracks in the Pavement, in Sydney. As i was placing the objects in the different public places, there were sparks of concern flying as people who looked on wondered if i was doing something sinister. i was even questioned by a market stall holder who was near one of the sites, asking me what it was and why i was sticking a camouflaged CD onto a wall in a public place. This type of public anxiety seems to have gotten worse since then, although, the choice of using nails as depicted in the picture is bound to freak some people out. This type of reaction is an unavoidable hazard of working as an independent public artist. Should this artist have notified authorities so as not to cause panic and chaos? Hard to know, considering if she had asked she may have been restricted or denied.
