dream activities
March 17th, 2006I recently watched Waking Life again for the 3rd time. I like this movie because it reminds me to pay attention to my dreams. I haven’t mastered the act of lucid dreaming yet. The closest i get is by setting my alarm to go off in the morning, then switching it to snooze. For some reason that slight edge of consciousness allows me to lucid dream until the alarm goes off again.
Last night I had a brilliant dream. It was one of those recurring activities that happen in dreams, but for some reason i always get surprised when it happens. This activity involves me being able to take a running jump/leap into the air and propel myself into the sky - i become airborne - and slowly drift back down to the ground again. I seem to be able to do it in relation to my breathing. The deeper the breath, the higher i go. Its an amazing sensation, and sometimes its scary because i go higher than i was expecting and i freak out - thinking i may not be able to get back down or i will fall hard. But generally i come back down to earth slowly.
This is has to be one of my favourite dream activities, when i remember i can do it. The other one is being able to breathe underwater. In these dreams i find myself drowning or swimming and i take a breath in out of desparation (drowning) or curiosity (swimming). Again it always comes as a surprise and I am happily swimming underwater exploring the depths of the sea or just enjoying the sensation. It an exhiliarating experience!

Flying in Dreams:
I have had similar dream experiences of flying and or hovering, sometimes I have to run, jump or somersault into the air, other times I can just levitate or hover. For some reason, if there are strangers present in the dream or I am in a public space, I intuitively feel that I have to keep this ability of flying or hovering a secret. My friend who also has flying dreams, says he too feels the need for secrecy when strangers are close by. I do not always heed this intuition however but kind of feel guilty afterwards if I do.
My most lucid dream experience was flying over and exploring the Islands of Hawaii, razor sharp clarity and vivid colors, lush tropical flowers in full bloom. Now flying over the Australian outback would be way cool, as I love aboriginal themes, digeridoos and the whole walk-about thing (even if it seems cliche)….maybe the aborigines are right, this is the dream world and what we call dreams are closer to true reality (at least in a mystical sense). The Balinese of Sankrit persuasion also have a similar belief, whereby the real world can only be perceived as a shadow play…aka shadow puppets. BTW, the alarm clock “trick” works for me too…..keep dreaming!
